The Volcanos Detroit, Michigan
The Volcanos first erupted in 1994. They set out to create a high-energy reinterpretation of classic '60s surf music. After cooking up a few originals, the band put out two 45s on their Neurotic Bop label. The records were greeted favorably by the then-swelling, post-Pulp-Fiction surf music scene. This is a flawless album from start to finish. It feels like Tal picked up where the maestro Ennio Morricone left off and expanded upon this portion of his work. The beautifully melodic guitar lines meld perfectly with spare but authoritative percussion and bass with just enough horns and other instruments to give it spice without overpowering the meal. And like a perfect meal it will leave you feeling satisfied and nourished.

Before they became Kobanes, these Chicago Ramones-inspired poppy punkers formed this instro-surf band with a creepy, satanic theme and actually came up with twelve great, spooky instrumental surf tunes that transcend the schlock. Recorded in the Mecca of pop-punk, Sonic Iguana, by the Pope of pop-punk, Mass Giorgini ten years ago, then they broke up and none of us even knew about it until now. It's a very unlikely scenario, but hey, the devil works in mysterious ways.
